Most event formats are built around one person doing one lap. Endurance racing is built around a team sharing a car, which makes it the only format that produces genuine group competition.
Endurance racing puts several drivers in one car across a longer race, with driver changes along the way. Translated to an event, that means departments or tables enter as teams, each member drives a stint, and the result belongs to the group rather than the individual.
It changes the social dynamic completely. In a fastest-lap competition the strongest driver wins and everyone else watches. In a relay the weakest driver matters just as much, so teams coach each other, and that is usually the actual point of the exercise.
Endurance racing runs faster and slower classes on track together. On a simulator that gives you a way to put confident and nervous drivers in the same race without either being spoiled, because they are competing within their own class.
